Millions Americans have this problem. Do you have it too?
Mary Shomon felt really tired in the morning and her doctor advised more sleep. Her hair fell out, she was depressed so this was maybe due to her preparations for her wedding. She went for the bridal fitting and could not zip the size 8 dress, this was shocking since she was 33 years old and the metabolism changed, but it is normal. She worked out, got a good diet, got some sleep. After a few months, she did not get better and had to get size 16 dress.
She had to get some tests and days later she found her thyroid was underactive.
15 years later she knew all about the thyroid. She wrote 8 books on this matter even for NY Times bestseller THE THYROID DIET. This is now the leading book on this matter. Her doctor never took signs seriously. Now she is not groggy or depressed but is nervous due to the doctors. Many people had this for years and doctors gave diagnoses like depression, laziness and more. One women even was told that she had problems due to a diet.
The American Association of clinical endocrinologists AACE said 27 millions in USA have this use and no diagnosis. The cause? These illnesses overlap and this is why doctors give wrong diagnoses. See Simple steps to accurate testing. Also doctors overlook the thyroid since this rarely kills you, and they focus on heart and diabetes more. Thyroid cancer is most survivable of all cancers since it is slow in progress. Some name it a good cancer and this is crazy says Shomon.
A thyroid illness like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, goiters, nodules also are risky. The butterfly shape gland in the throat makes hormones that control every process inside. This affects mood, skin, nails, hair, libido, heart, infertility, cholesterol, PMS and menopause too. This makes muscle aches, pain in joints, body heat, metabolism changes, said MD Mark Hyman, founder of UltraWellness center, Lenox, Massachusetts. He is also author of the Ultra thyroid solution.
A study from the Journal clinical endocrinology and metabolism said hypothyroidism affects 60% heart attacks in women, and risk is bigger with smoking, cholesterol, pressure, diabetes. Also this affects birth defects and 6% of all miscarriages are due to this. Also kids born this way have IQ 7 points less and double the chances of repeating a grade. Also there is risk of fibromyalgia, depression, osteoporosis, said Jacob Teitelbaum MD, director of the national Fibromyalgia and fatigue centers. Hyperthyroidism is just as bad and makes osteoporosis, prediabetes and heart failure.
Thyroid diseases types
Shomon is a poster example for the thyroid issues. 8 of 10 females have these issues and they are women, claimed AACE. They were all near menopause and the cause is not certain. RNC Marcelle Pick, a nurse at Women health care center, Yarmouth, Maine, said estrogen and progesterone imbalances make thyroid havoc and make the illness. There is a link between women in re-menopause in late 30s and 40s. also Shomon said the common cause as per the National institutes of health, people have more hypothyroidism more.
This is lack of thyroid hormones and underactive thyroid. The cause is Hashimoto’s disease and autoimmune diseases, the immunity attacks the thyroid and damages the hormones. Signs are weight gain, cold sensitivity, weak muscles, pain in joints, depression, no focus, fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, edema, no sex drive, hoarse voice, cholesterol, excess menstrual flow.
The hyperthyroidism is overactive gland and too much hormones. The cause is Graves’ illness. Signs are weight loss, more appetite, rapid heart, bulged eyes, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, trembling hands and fingers, sweating, weak muscles, diarrhea, low menstrual flow.
The nodules are swollen and this is part of the illness. By the time a female is 50, she has 50% chance of a nodule larger than ½ inch, said US department of health and human services. Nodules are mysterious, not known cause and no signs. Rarely, they make hyperthyroidism and hard time swallowing.
Cancer occurs in less than 10% nodules. Most affected are women over 40 with genes for thyroid cancer. This can spread slow and rarely, but removal of the thyroid kills cancer.
Goiters are enlargements of the thyroid gland due to lack of iodine. Also due to Hashimoto’s and Graves’.
Drug curing therapy
When Shomon got the hypothyroidism, she was prescribed Levoxyl. Along with this Synthroid, Unithroid, Levothroid, these are artificial hormones to kick start the thyroid and shrink nodules. These have no side effects but also no effect. After a year of Levoxyl, the signs were still there and she got a natural drug of dry powder pig thyroids. The name is Armour Thyroid, Westhroid, Naturethroid and so on. Veegtarians, there are no vege-versions since this tissue is from many sources and there is no way to see if something is from animal or not.
Shomon and other experts think natural thyroid drugs are far better since they give the main T3 and T4 hormones and the drugs give only T4. We change T4 to T3, active hormones, and drugs work just with a dose of T4. Integrative medicine experts this makes a big pressure on the gland. Hormones in natural cures can change due to the making of them, so this makes regular drugs better in this case. Teitelbaum said natural drugs must achieve the levels set of US Pharmacopeia.
Hyperthyroid drugs are opposite of the hypothyroid cousins, they block the gland. The common ones are methimazole, propylthiouracil. These have side effects, damage the immunity and liver too.
Now Shomon gets nature-throid with boost of T3. She also knows she needs more drugs and she gets mineral and vitamin supplements, np white flour, workouts, enough night sleep and stress-free methods for relaxing (imagery, meditation and yoga. Doctors have not learned this lesson. They focus on the Synthroid even if it is not needed. One reason why people do not improve is since meds are not for them said Hyman.
This gland is of the endocrine system and this goes from pituitary gland of brain to adrenal glands in kidneys. They work together to make vital hormones. One is pushed, the other gland says ouch!, claimed MD Mike Bauerschmidt, director of Full potential health care center, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In case of thyroid illness, examine the right cause.
DC Jennifer Greenfield, partner of Center for Chiropractic wellness, Raleigh, NC, sad the adrenal system is imbalance from stress of some kind and changes the hormone cortisol thus slowing the gland down. You end up this way with hypothyroidism. Unless adrenals are addressed, no improvement.
The hypothyroidism is from underlying cause and responds not so well to holistic curing. Drugs are the best here and avoid the thyroid storm of elevated pulse, pressure and temperature. Seek tradicional medicine, said Bauerschmidt.
These manage the gland and support, balance, detox you too. Some even cure hypothyroidism.
Salt got iodized in the 20s to prevent goiters. Teitelbaum said this is good for anyone, especially people with low sodium diet and sea salt. Get supplements of 150-250 mcg iodine per day and know that 12,500 mcg daily cures any thyroid issue. Get salt, capsules, tablets, liquids like Thyadine of TriMedcine.
Minerals and vitamins
Get zinc 20-30 mg daily, magnesium 400-600 mg daily, calcium citrate 800-1200 mg daily said Hyman. For hypothyroid, get selenium 200-300 mcg daily. Also vitamin A 2500-5000 IU daily and D3 too 1000-2000 IU daily, also 5000-10000 IU daily for 6 months to bind with receptors for metabolism. B vitamins 25-50 mg each B1, B2, B6, 50-100 mg of B3 and B12,100-500 mg B5, 150-1000 mcg B7 and 800 mcg B9. Hyperthyroid needs copper 6-8 mg daily to limit hormones.
Sea veggies like kelp have iodine. Also omega 3 foods, walnuts, flaxseed, fatty fish, salmon, sardines. Brazil nuts for selenium, gamma oryzanol in rice bran oil boosts thyroid too. Caffeine limits absorbing of thyroid meds. Wat 60 min before you take the meds after tea or coffee.
Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, peach, strawberry, radishes, peanuts, millet, spinach are goitrogenic and hinder thyroid hormones making by reducing the body iodine. Cook them and avoid large servings for hypothyroid. Uncooked goitrogen like broccoli, for most people is ok. For hyperthyroid, have more of these foods. Hyman adds 30% of people with Hashimoto’s have bad reaction to gluten, protein in wheat, rye, barley. Get tests for gluten too. MD Thom E. Lobe, director founder of Beneveda medical group, BH, California said soy MIGHT be the cause of thyroid problems. Young women must avoid this since it has too much estrogen, for men yet it has to be discovered. These items affect the sex hormone estrogen that meddles with other hormones. Young women have more estrogen than menopause women. Soy also is goitrogenic food but experts are still unsure if this has enough iodine -zapping items. Limit soy and fermented foods like tempeh, this is less goitrogenic than raw soy, and edamame.
Herbs and supplements
For optimal work of the gland, ND Holly Lucille of WH, California said you need regulated adrenals with ashwagandha 500 mg daily, licorice 400 mg daily, Siberian ginseng 450 mg daily and rhodiola 200 mg daily. Lemon balm, L carnitine, lithospermum stoneseed lower the hyperthyroidism. Shomon advises a herbalist for the right dose. Ayurveda herbs like manjistha and guggul detox the thyroid and make lymph drainage, doses all vary said John Douillard, PhD, Ayurveda expert in Boulder, Colorado. Supplements like Gaia Herbs thyroid support are mix of ashwagandha, kelp, schisandra. Now thyroid energy is a mix of B vitamins, magnesium, iodine, zinc, copper.
Heavy metal/chemicals detox
Metals like mercury and toxins (pesticides, chemicals, pollutants) all meddle with thyroid. Lucille said to try 2 week liver detox 2 times per year to clean well, also talk to a naturopath for heavy metal urine and blood checks and change in the diet too. See Detox the right way. Hyman advises to sweat out the metals and toxins in sauna, steam bath several times weekly. Get a 10 min session, increase time slowly to 40 min tops. Also have a hot bath with 2 cups Epsom and 8 oz baking soda.
Water and air filter
Hyman said to avoid fluoride and chlorine of unfiltered water since these mess up the iodine. Airborne mold, allergens, pollutants all make this too. Get water filter for the faucet and HEPA air filters for the home
Aerobic workouts and strength workouts remove excess adrenal hormones. Not too much though, more or less an hour, few times weekly stresses the adrenals. Experts thing yoga helps here, Camel, shoulderstand, bridge poses are the best for hormones.
Lucille advises meditation, biofeedback, 15 min relaxation daily too. Seven hours of sleep at night as well.
Greenfield advises that bad aligned vertebrae mixes up nerves and thyroid. Get chiropractice.
Jeanette Painovich, Lac, in Los Alamitos, California said this corrects every imbalance inside. She cures hypothyroidism same as spleen qi deficits, herbs for phlegm like kun bu, zhi bei mu, ban xia, bai zhu, astragalus, dong quai and more. Chinese medicine says hyperthyroidism makes depressed liver qi and is cured with chai nu and chen pi. See more articles and thyroid tests, here.
