Lots of people drink diet soda and think it helps in losing weight. They also think this is much safer than regular sodas.
But sadly, this is unhealthy. A Purdue expert, and other health officials warned people against diet soda and avoiding such sugary drinks.
The Ph.D., Susan E. Swithers, prof. of physiological science and behavioral neuroscience of Purdue, said we must limit sweeteners and even no calorie items.
She studied many notes that concerned with diet soda and was found that 30% American adults and 15% kids consume these sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, saccharin…
She added that there is public health sector pressure to see what causes chronic issues and obesity and lots of money are at stake in the food industry for these products.
Beverages are political issues since the government seeks regulation and taxes to limit these items, but these measures mostly EXCLUDE soft drinks since they are named healthy!
As far as policy making goes, it is more crucial than ever that science must be included and the public has to know what science says, to achieve health.
The artificial sweeteners confuse the human body to deal with calories based on the sweet taste and people eat sweets excessively, thus having twice the risk of metabolic syndrome.
Studies found that diet sodas cause health problems like:
Metabolic syndrome and diabetes 2
The Diabetes Care journal made a study in 2009 and it showed that diet soda makes 36% more risk of metabolic syndrome and 67% for diabetes. The sweeteners affect the gut and brain links and lead to metabolic damages. An expert team of Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel said these soft drinks change gut microbes and raise risk of metabolic issues. Mice were fed with zero calorie sodas and sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, sucralose – they all got glucose intolerance.
More than 4 cans soda daily makes 30% more risk of depression and 4 coffee cups has better effects reducing the depression risk by 10%.
Such drinks raise risk of asthma and COPD signs. As to an Australian study, 13.3% of people studied with asthma and 15.6% with COPD, all had over 2 sodas per day.
– Harvard experts studied people who had sodas for more than 20 years and the results was that sodas on the long run increase kidney damage by 30%.
Miami and Columbia Universities made studies with more than 2000 adults and was said that those who had sodas had more risk of attack and strokes.
Less healthy brain
The aspartame, a common soda sweetener is damaging the brain and its antioxidants, and on the long run it makes imbalance in antioxidants of the brain via the mechanism having the glutathione-dependent systems.
Also, studies found that this sweetener also links to:
- Brain tumors
- Chemical insensitivity
- Weight gain
- Chronic fatigue
- Hearing loss
- Multiple sclerosis
- Birth defects
- Short term memory loss
Due to this, you must be cautious with diet sodas since they are worse than regular sugar sodas. They make you lose weight, BUT also make many health issues like heart problems, obesity and metabolic damage.
If you like fizzy drinks and sodas, try the healthy drink Kombucha.
